Transforigami Community Pavilion

Perdana Botanical Garden, Kuala Lumpur

Year 2 Community Project

The name of this project is Transforigami. It combines the words 'transform’ and ‘origami’ into one. This is because the concept of the structure is based on transformation of something flat like paper and making it 3-dimensional. In a way it represents how togetherness and change can bring improvement and support to something. The reason I chose this concept is because the client, Eats, Shoots & Roots, is aimed towards educating and transforming our community into growing their own vegetables.

Because the structure is self supported (No use of steel frame etc.), it is important to choose a light yet strong material hence wood is the perfect choice. Using wood also gives me a chance too utilize recycled or recyclable materials to have less carbon footprint on the planet. This is especially important because the pavilion is temporary and using non recyclable materials would be an extra waste. The flooring is a vinyl flooring and uses a floor joist method of installing it. Because the pavilion is only temporary, I used vinyl because it does not require concrete foundations and the materials are recyclable.
